Daylong meditation retreats are an opportunity to set aside the demands of life and focus fully on practice for a dedicated period of time. This enables us to practice deeply and develop continuity of mindfulness, and can be a great source of inspiration to our greater meditation practices and daily lives.
This daylong meditation retreat will focus on cultivating continuity of mindfulness in both our practice and daily lives. The retreat will draw from the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha’s foundational discourse on establishing mindfulness and cultivating insight. The morning practice periods will emphasize mindfulness of the body and settling the mind. The afternoon will emphasize mindfulness of the mind and practicing with the five hindrances of meditation practice.
The retreat will offer multiple modes of practice to support continuity of mindfulness, and will be suitable for those with no retreat practice as well as those who have sat many silent retreats. The day will alternate sitting and walking/movement practice, with some guided practice and plenty of silence.
To participate in all aspects of the retreat, it will be helpful to have a comfortable place to sit as well as somewhere for walking practice (outdoors or indoors, look to be able to take 10 to 15 paces before turning around). Additionally, we encourage maintaining silence throughout the retreat; however, if life demands minor communication with your family or roommates during the day, that too will be an opportunity to practice mindfulness. There will be one hour for lunch at midday--preparing something simple in advance can help avoid too much work during this time.
The retreat is offered freely by Jean Haley, Alex Meyers, and Benjamin Hohl of Minneapolis Insight. All donations will support the Minneapolis Insight community. This will be a remote retreat conducted via Zoom; the link will be sent to your email after you register.
