Dear Community,
Sunday 10am Community Practice & Discussion
Last week, Jean led an exploration of “Still Amidst the Change.” Building on this theme, this week Benjamin will offer an exploration of “Befriending the Liminal.” We will explore the meaning of the term “liminal” and how it applies to both internal and external transitions. In particular, the emphasis will be on how to recognize aspects of our lives that actively are in, or have been in, liminal states, and the value of having a conscious and intentional relationship with these important transitional periods.
Phillip Moffitt, in a New Year’s talk at Marin Sangha in 2017, spoke about liminal states as follows:
… And that is the moment of being in a change. You're neither in the coming moment, the coming year, the coming circumstances that you will be, but you have stepped away from what you were. So you're in this threshold moment. This threshold moment can last for weeks, months, even years. In the work I do, it's called the liminal state, being in between…
Before we've entered something, there is a reflective moment. There's a pause. There's an extended consideration sometimes. There's a consideration before any movement. We're at the threshold of movement. We know we're finished with the job, that we're finished living where we're living now. But we've not yet stepped into living somewhere else, into some other job, into a change, the way our relationship with a parent, a child, a lover, a spouse, a brother, sister, a cousin, a teacher is over, but there's not a new one yet. It's a threshold. It's in between. It's in between. There's this energetic presence to it. It's not just an idea, it's actually something that we can access in my experience. Not always — sometimes it's too fast, but lots of times it’s not so fast, particularly with big situations... and so to honor this time of the year, to honor our own capacity for choosing change, for directing change, that is why I bring this to our attention tonight.”
You can find the full talk here, though listening in advance of our Sunday is entirely optional.
