Dear Community,
(From Jane) This Sunday we will continue our exploration of the Noble Eightfold Path by considering the second of the factors: Wise Intention. It has been so interesting to explore how Wise Intention guides how we live our everyday lives and how it is related to what Jean and Benjamin have shared these last few weeks.
This second factor of the Eightfold Path is referred to in many ways, including right, wise, or correct - intention, thought, or resolve, and different teachers emphasize different aspects. But I like how Phillip Moffit describes Right Intention as “the bridge between understanding and action.”
Phillip states that the understanding we gain through our development of Right View would remain conceptual and passive without the commitment to act, in the here and now, that Wise Intention offers. He states that Wise Intention is immediate, energetic, and attentive and grounds us in our commitment to not cause suffering for yourself or others. With Wise Intention “you meet the world with compassion, loving kindness, generosity, and integrity. Your wise intention empowers you to align your thoughts, words, and actions with your deepest understanding.” (Dancing with Life, p. 235) With Wise Intention we can live from our deepest values, which brings a sense of well-being and ease into our lives.
I look forward to gathering this Sunday to practice together and share our curiosity about and experience of Wise Intention in our lives. I hope that you will be able to join us.
